July was another memorable month for Diego, and once again he proved why Standardbreds are
such incredible all-around horses.
We kicked off the month at the Weekend Warrior Horse Club, where Diego continued to impress
in both barrels and poles. Saturday was a fantastic start to the weekend, earning our first ever 1D
win in Pole Bending and a 2D win in Adult Barrels. On Sunday, although our pole runs were a
little off our Saturday pace, Diego came back with a personal best in this arena with an 18.000-
second run in the Adult Barrels, finishing 3rd in the 1D. At 22 years old, Diego continues to raise
the bar and remind everyone that Standardbreds have the athleticism, heart, and determination to
compete at a high level.
After five consecutive weekends of competition, Diego enjoyed a well-earned three-week break
before we returned to B&H Ranch on the final weekend of July.
While Diego once again showed his talent, the highlight of the weekend wasn’t our own results it
was watching him carry his 13-year-old beginner youth rider through the barrel pattern. The
same horse that confidently runs competitive 18-second barrel patterns quietly trotted a young
rider around the barrels, helping her gain confidence and earn ribbons of her own.
Moments like these are what make Diego so special. His versatility, patience, and kind nature
make him an exceptional competitor while also allowing him to be a safe and trustworthy teacher
for young riders. Whether he’s chasing personal bests or helping a beginner fall in love with the
sport, Diego gives 100% every time.
I truly couldn’t ask for a better partner or a better ambassador for New Start Standardbreds. He
continues to showcase the incredible versatility of the breed and demonstrate that, with the right
opportunity, Standardbreds can excel in so many different careers after the racetrack.
