FINDING THE RIGHT MATCH
Thank you for your interest in adopting through New Start Standardbreds! Our goal is simple: match the right horse with the right home. We take the time to learn about both our horses and our adopters so we can help set everyone up for success.
BEFORE YOU APPLY
Please make sure you:
Have read the horse’s adoption listing and believe they may be a good fit.
Are at least 18 years old.
Have permission from your property owner if applicable.
Have the financial ability to care for a horse long-term.
Understand that horses require ongoing expenses such as feed, hay, farrier care, veterinary care, and emergency funds.
OUR ADOPTION PROCESS
Step 1: Submit an Application
Complete our adoption application and tell us about your experience, goals, and facility.
Step 2: Reference Check
We may contact your veterinarian, farrier, coach, or other references.
Step 3: Property Review
Photos are required for all applications. In some situations, we may request additional information or a virtual visit.
Step 4: Match Discussion
We will review your application and discuss whether the horse you’re interested in is the right fit. We may also suggest another horse if we feel there is a better match. We then can book viewings for you to meet potential matches and their caretakers.
Step 5: Adoption Approval
If approved, an adoption agreement will be completed and transportation arrangements can begin.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Adoption Fees
Adoption fees vary by horse. Fees help offset a portion of the care costs invested in each horse before adoption.
Transportation
Transportation is the responsibility of the adopter unless otherwise arranged. We are often happy to help coordinate shipping when possible. New Start Standardbreds does not have access to a trailer so is unable to provide trailering directly.
Trial Periods
We do not offer trial periods, however please review our fostering page to learn about our foster-to-adopt program. We are committed to helping adopters find the right match before adoption.
Returns
If at any point you can no longer keep your adopted horse, they must be returned to New Start or have an approved home confirmed by us before being leaving the care of the adopter on file. We highly recommend ensuring that your family, friends, boarding facility, and your will include a plan of action for your adopted Standardbred, should you become incapacitated and unable to care for them.
OUR EXPECTATIONS
We want every horse to have a safe, caring, and suitable home. We do not require perfect facilities or expensive barns.
Please review our Standards of Care page for information on what is expected in order to adopt from New Start.
AFTER ADOPTION
Our support does not end when the horse leaves. We are happy to answer questions, offer guidance, and celebrate your progress. We love receiving updates and following our horses as they settle into their new lives! We also have required check-ups to be conducted post-adoption. These are mandatory and a stipulation of your adoption contact.
