Adopting a horse is a big decision, and we want to make sure every horse goes to a safe and suitable home. Our adoption process helps us learn more about you, your experience, and the type of home you can provide.
Below is a quick overview of how the process works.
1. Explore Available Horses
Start by browsing our [Meet Our Horses] pages, where you’ll find adoptable Standardbreds in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes. Each horse has their own profile with information about their personality, training, and what type of home may suit them best.
2. Submit an Application
When you’re ready, complete the adoption application form on this page (you can find it below). Be sure to review the Standards of Care requirements for adoption. This helps us understand your experience, facilities, and goals so we can ensure the best possible fit.
3. Reference & Home Check
After we receive your application, someone from our team will review it. We will contact the references you provided and may reach out to you with a few follow-up questions.
Please be sure that once you submit an application, that our email address administration@newstartstandardbreds.com is in your Safe Sender or contact list, so that our emails do not end up in your spam folder!
Once you can submit an application you can also connect with us via email or on social media, so we have a backup way to connect if our emails to you do bounce.
Every horse’s safety and well-being is our priority.
4. Meet & Match
If your application is approved, we’ll coordinate a visit (or potential trial, if that is applicable to your situation) so you can meet the horse. We encourage you to ask questions, spend time, and ensure it feels like the right connection.
5. Adoption Agreement
Once both sides are confident, we finalize with an adoption contract. The contract outlines care standards, ensures the horse cannot be bred or resold, and confirms our lifelong support.
6. Bringing Your Horse Home
Once everything is finalized, we will help coordinate transport and answer any questions you may have. Our team is always here to support adopters after the horse goes home. You’re part of our New Start family now!
