Whether a Standardbred comes directly from the racetrack or from a situation where extra care is needed, every horse deserves a safe place to land. Fostering provides that bridge; a temporary but life-changing role that prepares horses for their forever homes.

What Fostering Means

Thank you for your interest in fostering with New Start Standardbreds! Foster homes are the heart of our program. Every horse needs a safe place to stay while they recover, learn new skills, or wait for their adoptive home. By fostering, you help give a horse the time and support they need for a successful transition. Please review our Standards of Care page to see what we require of a foster home.

What Does Fostering Involve?

As a foster home, you provide:

• Daily care and handling.
• Feed, hay, and routine farrier care.
• A safe environment for the horse to settle in.
• Updates, photos, and communication with our team.

Every horse is different. Some simply need a place to stay while they wait for adoption. Others may need rehabilitation, training, or extra support before they are ready for their next home.

We work closely with all foster homes and provide support throughout the placement.
Depending on the foster arrangement, New Start may provide:

• Veterinary care.
• Reimbursement for approved expenses.
• Training plans or rehabilitation guidance.
• Ongoing support from our team.

We’ll discuss the details of each placement individually before a horse arrives so everyone knows what to expect.

Types of Foster Arrangements

Short-Term Foster
Typically up to three months while a horse waits for adoption or placement.

Long-Term Foster
For horses who need additional time before finding the right home.

Rehabilitation Foster
For horses recovering from injury, illness, or requiring specialized care.

Retirement Foster
For horses who need a safe and comfortable place to enjoy their retirement years.

Foster – To – Adopt

Interested in adoption but want to make sure it’s the right fit first? Our Foster-to-Adopt program allows you to bring a horse home and get to know them before making a final decision. Please note that a home can only do one foster-to-adopt opportunity per 365 days.
