MAGIC MOONSTONE

Magic is looking for a new home directly from her current family. She is a big, attractive mare with plenty of personality and is best suited to an experienced horse person who appreciates a typical sassy mare. Magic likes her personal space and isn’t particularly interested in constant affection, but she is not aggressive or mean. She can have some attitude and is good at expressing her opinions, but her family feels that with regular handling and consistent work, she has the potential to develop a strong relationship with her person. She just has not had that consistency due to their work schedule.

Magic has previous driving experience, although she has not been driven in approximately 5 years. She is not broke to ride, but has previously allowed people to sit on her without issue. Magic sustained a bowed tendon while training as a 2yo. She was rehabilitated and an attempt was made to return her to racing, but the bow later recurred. She is currently sound and comfortable, but we would recommend veterinary evaluation of the tendon if you wish to do more than just flat work/trail riding (ie. jumping).

Magic is barefoot, an easy keeper and currently lives outside 24/7. During the winter she is accustomed to coming inside with daily turnout, although she is happiest with plenty of outdoor time and can become more opinionated when stalled for extended periods. Our priority is finding an experienced home that understands her history, respects her personality and is interested in giving this independent girl the consistency she does best with.

BLAKESAGENT

Blake is a friendly, easygoing gelding looking for a special home where companionship can be his job. Blake is noticeably pigeon-toed in front, and after making his final race start in July 2025, he developed a significant issue with his right ankle. His owner reports that there is minimal cartilage remaining in the affected ankle. He had a difficult period following his retirement, but has improved considerably over the past year and is currently enjoying daily turnout and life with his equine companion. Blake is not currently on any medication, but he does continue to have soundness limitations and may be “off” on the affected leg, particularly when moving more actively in turnout and playing with his friends. He is reasonably sound at the walk. For this reason, he is being offered as a companion rather than a riding prospect.

What Blake may lack in athletic options, he makes up for with an exceptionally pleasant disposition. He is described as friendly, willing and easy to have around, with no issues handling him for routine veterinary or farrier care. He is barefoot, enjoys his food and currently lives happily with another gelding. Blake has been driven and is described as quiet in harness, although he has never been ridden. Most importantly, he enjoys company and would benefit from a home where he has another horse for companionship and people who have time to spend with him. His current owner is not in a rush to place him and wants to find a home that genuinely suits his needs, where Blake can simply be enjoyed for the personable young horse he is.

Piper is looking for a new home after several years with her adopter. This is not a decision that has been made lightly. Changes in her adopter’s personal circumstances have made it increasingly difficult to provide Piper with the time and commitment she needs long-term, and after trying to find other solutions, the difficult decision has been made to ask New Start to help find her another home. Piper is very much cared about, and the priority now is finding her a suitable place where she can be well cared for and enjoyed in this next stage of her life.

At 20 years old, Piper would be happiest in a home where companionship is her primary job. She is an easy keeper, good to handle and tie, and does best with regular handling and interaction. She can also be enjoyed for occasional light riding or trail riding by an experienced rider, although she can have a typical mare stubborn streak and has not been ridden regularly over the past year. Piper has arthritis in her hind, and when she was being ridden more consistently, she was maintained on 1/4 tablet of Previcox. Her veterinary records are available, and she is up to date on vaccinations and dental care as of March as well as her farrier care. For someone with room for an older mare who can enjoy a quieter life with some occasional adventures, Piper may be a lovely addition.

BRYDOWN BIG KISSES

Brye is the 2026 New Start Trainers Challenge Champion! After 12 weeks of training with Mollie Hrycay, the pair finished the Challenge on September 18 by taking the overall title. It was a steady progression built around confidence, trust and giving Brye the foundation she needed. She finished the Challenge showing just how far she has come, but, despite walking away as this year’s Champion, Brye is still looking for her person.

Brye now has a solid walk and trot, is developing her canter and has worked on backing, leg yields, bending, stretching, working in a frame and pole work. She particularly enjoys getting out of the arena and has ridden well off property, through water, over logs and around cars, bicycles and dogs. She trailers well and is quiet to tie. Brye has also received very positive feedback from an experienced upper-level event rider, who feels she shows real promise for eventing with the right rider and continued development. Between that assessment and what she demonstrated throughout the Challenge, we believe Brye has exciting potential for an experienced rider looking for a talented horse to continue bringing along.

Brye is affectionate and people-oriented, but she is still a developing horse who is best suited to a confident, experienced rider. She can become excitable under saddle and may occasionally test boundaries, but responds well to clear, consistent direction and has become increasingly confident in looking to her rider for guidance. Brye is a red ribbon girl around other horses and appreciates having her personal space respected, particularly while being ridden. She has made tremendous progress throughout the Challenge and now offers her future adopter a solid foundation, a willing attitude and plenty of potential to continue developing in whichever direction suits them both.

Sugar is a quiet, well-mannered mare who is ready to begin her next chapter after retiring from racing and her short & unsuccessful broodmare career. She is described as very easy to work with and has a kind, uncomplicated nature, making her enjoyable to handle both on the ground and for routine farrier and veterinary care. She currently lives happily on 24/7 turnout, is barefoot, and has no special feeding requirements. Although she retired from racing following a front tendon injury, she has no lameness or soundness limitations and has been completely comfortable since her retirement.

Sugar is looking for a home where she can continue to thrive as a pleasure horse. With her sensible temperament and athletic build, she is expected to be well suited for pleasure driving, flat work (dressage, mountain trail, etc) or simply as a trail riding career with the appropriate training. She offers a wonderful opportunity for someone looking for a quality Standardbred with a quiet and eager to please disposition, and she is ready to build a lasting partnership.

MOMMAS MIRACLE

Andy is a playful, friendly and boisterous gelding looking for a very special companion home. He has been diagnosed with a mild case of Wobblers Syndrome, which causes some awkwardness in his hind end when running. Because of this, Andy has never been trained to race or drive and is being placed strictly as a non-riding companion horse. He enjoys life on 24/7 turnout and would be best suited to an experienced horse person who understands his limitations and can provide him with an appropriate, safe environment.

Andy is personable and will come up to be caught, accepts a halter and leads. He is barefoot and is accustomed to having his feet trimmed, although his handling and life experiences are more limited than those of a horse who has gone through race training. He also has limited trailering experience. Andy has plenty of personality and loves to play, and for the right experienced home looking for a companion rather than a riding prospect, he could be a very rewarding addition to the herd.

Candy has had quite the life, first enjoying an impressive career on the racetrack where she earned nearly $450,000 before moving on to become a broodmare. She went on to produce 11 foals and has now officially retired from broodmare duties. Her owners have recently moved and sadly need to downsize their herd, so they are hoping to find Candy a wonderful home where she can enjoy this next and much quieter chapter of her life. She is described as a lovely, quiet and uncomplicated mare who is very good to work with, including for routine veterinary and farrier care.

Candy currently lives happily on 24/7 turnout and is barefoot, with no reported medical concerns, injuries or soundness limitations. She is being offered primarily as a companion/non-riding horse, although pleasure driving or riding could be a possibility given her extensive racing background. After a lifetime that has included success both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed, Candy deserves a comfortable retirement with a family who will appreciate this sweet older mare for exactly who she is.

MAMMOTH JACK

Jack is back in Ontario after returning to New Start from his previous adoptive home in Alberta. Jack was very loved, but it became clear that he thrives with a consistent riding routine, regular interaction and a job to focus on. He is a talented, athletic and expressive gelding who forms strong connections with his people. Under saddle, he is soft and willing when kept in regular work, with experience in flatwork, low-level dressage, jumping and trail riding. He does best with a confident rider who can provide him with consistency and clear direction.

Jack is sound, barefoot and comfortable living either outdoors or with a combination of stall and turnout. He has vision loss on one side and did have a previous history of ulcers that has responded well to treatment and management, with limited reoccurrence. For now, Jack is taking a couple of weeks to settle back into Ontario after his long trip and will receive some refresher rides while we get reacquainted with him. Once he is ready, he will be available for adoption to an experienced home looking for a smart, affectionate horse who truly enjoys having a person and a purpose.

Daeva recently joined New Start’s rehabilitation program following a fractured sesamoid sustained at the end of March 2026. She is currently undergoing a carefully managed rehabilitation plan with stall rest, and her progress will continue to be monitored as she recovers.

At this stage, Daeva is focused on healing and taking things one day at a time. As with any significant injury, her long-term prognosis and future career options will depend on how she progresses throughout rehabilitation. Our priority is giving her the time, care, and support she needs to achieve the best possible outcome.

She is not currently available for adoption while she remains in rehabilitation. We look forward to sharing updates on her journey as she continues her recovery and begins the next chapter of her life beyond the racetrack.

Billy joined the New Start rehabilitation program after sustaining a tendon injury during a race in mid-July, bringing his racing career to an earlier end than anyone had hoped. While his focus is currently on recovery, Billy has settled into rehab well and is receiving the time, care, and support he needs to heal properly.

Billy’s journey is just beginning. With careful rehabilitation, regular monitoring, and patience, our goal is to give him every opportunity to enjoy a comfortable and successful second career once he is medically cleared.

MEMO

Memo recently joined New Start after being purchased at auction and is currently in rehabilitation while we give him time to settle into a proper aftercare retirement life. He comes to us following an extensive racing career that included 182 lifetime starts, 26 wins and nearly $500,000 in earnings, with his final race taking place in August 2025, it is unknown what he was doing for the past year since then but he has some fairly significant scars that tell us it was not incredibly kind. For now, our focus is on getting to know Memo and assessing what will suit him best in his next chapter.

Memo has now completed quarantine and we are in the process of moving him to his foster placement. Once settled, his foster home will help us get to know him outside of the racing environment and begin assessing his personality, abilities and needs as we determine the most appropriate next steps for him. Memo is not currently available for adoption, but we look forward to learning more about him and sharing updates as he progresses through the program.

Friends is now home in Ontario and enjoying some well-earned rest and rehabilitation with members of her former racing family. She has made remarkable progress since being found underweight in a Pennsylvania auction pen only a few months ago. Today she looks incredible, is in great spirits and continues to regain her condition while surrounded by people who already know her well.

For now, our focus remains on giving her a little more time to rest and allowing her body to fully catch up. If she continues progressing well, the plan is to begin introducing her to work under saddle in the coming weeks so we can learn more about her abilities and determine what type of adoptive home will suit her best. She is not currently available for adoption, but we are excited to see what this next stage brings for her.

LYONS LEVI LEWIS

Lewis joined New Start at the end of August after being purchased from the same Pennsylvania auction pen where Friends to the End had been found the month before. Lewis had an accomplished racing career, earning more than $492,000 and notably finishing second to Artspeak in the 2014 Metro Pace. Now that his racing days are behind him, this sweet gelding has the opportunity to receive the time, care and rehabilitation he needs as he transitions into retirement.

Lewis is currently finishing his quarantine period in Pennsylvania and will soon make the trip home to Ontario to continue his rehabilitation. For now, our focus will be on helping him regain condition, settle into his new surroundings and simply giving his body some time before we ask anything more of him. Lewis is not currently available for adoption unless someone is interested in taking on his rehab under our guidance, but as his rehabilitation progresses, we look forward to getting to know him and eventually determining what the next chapter of his life may look like.

ROCK ABY BABY

Baby joined New Start at the end of August after being purchased from the same Pennsylvania auction as Lewis. A young, Canadian-bred mare who last raced at the end of May 2026, she found herself at auction only a few months after leaving the track. She may not have had a particularly successful racing career, but there was something about this young mare that made us feel she deserved the opportunity to find out what else life could hold for her.

Baby is now beginning that opportunity with New Start. She needs time to regain condition, decompress and learn that she can trust the people around her before we begin asking what her next career might look like. For now, there are no expectations beyond giving her the care, consistency and time she needs. She is not currently available for adoption, but once her rehabilitation is further along and we have had the opportunity to get to know her, we will begin assessing what may suit her for the future.

GODZILLA

Godzilla recently joined New Start after a stifle issue prevented his racing career from getting underway. He is currently doing some minor rehab with an experienced adopter of ours who agreed to take him on as a foster project, where the focus is on giving him the time and appropriate care he needs. Thankfully, his rehabilitation needs are relatively minor, and we are hopeful that with some patience he will be able to move on to a new career.

Once Godzilla has completed his rehab, we will reassess him and begin looking at the next steps in his training. The hope is that this young gelding will eventually be able to enjoy a future as a pleasure or trail riding horse. For now, he is not available for adoption while we give him the opportunity to finish his rehabilitation properly and make sure he is ready for whatever comes next.

LIMCO SUN

Stormy joined New Start in May 2026 through another aftercare program when his adoptive placement was no longer the right fit. As he was located closer to us, we were asked to help support his next chapter. Since arriving, Stormy has settled in well.

Stormy is broke to ride and has a wealth of experience, mainly from being an Amish driver for many years. He has participated in youth camps, group trail rides, and has spent time being the kind of horse people can enjoy. While he knows his job, Stormy is not the bravest horse in the world. He can become nervous when faced with situations he is unsure about, particularly when he’s on his own. There is also something about him that suggests life has not always been kind, but despite that, he continues to try his heart out for the people around him.

These days, Stormy is enjoying life in foster care, where he has taken on a very important role as a companion for another horse who recently lost their longtime friend. He has settled into the position beautifully. His only major complaint? The bugs. Stormy is quite certain that bugs are one of life’s greatest injustices and would happily vote to eliminate them entirely.

At this time, Stormy is not available for adoption as he continues in his foster placement. We look forward to sharing updates on this handsome little gentleman as he enjoys his well-earned role as a trusted friend.

SULLY

Sully arrived at New Start with very little history and no registration papers, but what he lacked in information, he made up for in heart.

Since arriving, Sully has spent the past several months focusing on healing, regaining weight, and learning that life can be predictable again. Through veterinary assessment, it was determined that Sully has arthritis in his hock, as well as evidence of an old injury higher up on the same leg. While he remains comfortable in his day-to-day life, these findings make him best suited for a companion home.

Sully is a gentle, sensitive gelding who is looking for someone willing to take the time to earn his trust. He can be shy with new people and situations, but beneath that uncertainty is a kind horse who wants to connect. He does best with a calm, consistent person who understands that confidence is built through patience rather than pressure. He has clearly been handled badly in the past and he needs to know he can trust his person to be kind.

In the herd, Sully is very low on the pecking order and prefers quiet, friendly companions. He would be happiest in a peaceful herd where he doesn’t have to compete for resources. A lower-key environment with steady routines will help him continue to thrive.

Sully is now currently a pasture partner for a horse who sadly lost their companion. He’s in a foster to hopefully adopt situation so is not available at this time!

ARTS MAJORITY

Lady has remained with New Start while we continued to assess her comfort and quality of life. Unfortunately, as the weather has become cooler, we have seen increasing signs that her body is struggling. She is becoming less comfortable and is no longer consistently stable on her compromised knee. At 22 years old, Lady has told us in the ways that matter that her body is tired.

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision that Lady will be humanely euthanized before winter. She is no longer available for adoption, and our focus now is simply on keeping her comfortable and giving her good days for the time she has left. This is never an easy decision, but we do not want to wait until Lady is in crisis or until a bad day makes the decision for us. We believe allowing her to go peacefully, while she is comfortable and surrounded by the people who care for her, is the kindest decision we can make.

Summer recently joined New Start after being purchased at an auction sale at the beginning of August. As an older mare who arrived needing some additional groceries and care, her focus right now is simply on rehabilitation and giving her the time she needs to settle in. We are still getting to know Summer and will share more about her personality, history and future suitability as we learn more about her.

Summer has now completed quarantine and we are in the process of moving her to a foster-to-adopt home, where she will have the opportunity to continue settling in while her potential adopter gets to know her. Because this placement is currently in progress, Summer is not available for adoption at this time. We will continue to follow her progress and provide updates as she settles into her new surroundings.

ALWAYS N THE MONEY

Money is an incredibly handsome gelding who comes to New Start from a family who has loved him deeply for many years. After Money was claimed away from them and subsequently sustained an injury during a race, his former connections went out of their way to bring him back home. They gave him the time and care he needed to rehabilitate and have continued to provide him with a wonderful home ever since. With some significant life changes now ahead, they reached out to New Start to help ensure Money’s future remained just as secure.

We are especially grateful that this family, who has entrusted several horses to New Start over the years, has once again trusted us with one of their own. Even better, we have found Money a potential foster-to-adopt home close to the people who have loved and cared for him for so long. Money is not currently available for adoption while we give this placement the opportunity to develop. We are very hopeful that he may have already found his next family while still getting to remain close to the people who worked so hard to give him the retirement he deserved.
