Brye has spent the summer participating in New Start’s 2026 Trainers Challenge with trainer Mollie Hrycay. An early soundness setback due to flat soles meant that some of their original training plans had to be put on hold, but the extra time spent on groundwork, trust and confidence proved valuable. Since returning to work, Brye has continued to develop into an affectionate, willing mare who enjoys having a job and looks to her rider for direction when she is unsure.

Under saddle, Brye has a solid walk and trot and is currently developing her canter. She is learning to back, leg yield, bend and work in a frame, along with stretching and pole work. She particularly enjoys getting out of the arena and has ridden well off property, both in the field and on the trails. She goes through water, over logs and has handled cars, bicycles and dogs. Her trainer feels she has potential for a home interested in trail riding, endurance, cross-country or eventing. She trailers well and is quiet to tie. Brye can live inside or out and is comfortable alone or with a buddy, although she does require some grain to help maintain healthy weight when in consistent work.

Brye is still developing and is best suited to an experienced, confident rider who can continue her education with consistency. She can become excitable under saddle and may occasionally have a small buck or pop up, and she can test boundaries, although she responds well to clear correction. She is dominant in the field and can kick toward other horses that come too close, including while being handled or ridden around them, so appropriate space and management will be important. With people, however, Brye is very affectionate and enjoys attention. Her confidence has come a long way throughout the Challenge, and she offers someone a solid foundation with plenty of room to continue developing her into the type of riding partner they are looking for.

TEMPEST TALE

Tilly is a sweet, sensitive mare who has made great progress in foster care and is now ready to begin looking for her new home. She can initially be shy in new situations, but with a calm, patient approach she gains confidence and shows herself to be a kind and willing partner. She lives in a mixed herd, tends to be lower in the herd hierarchy, and is barefoot and has no known medical concerns.

She has been started under saddle and is proving to be quiet and sensible. She stands well at the mounting block and has been ridden down the road both alone and in company. She is beginning to trot but remains more comfortable pacing at this stage. Her caretaker feels she has excellent potential as a trail horse, especially for someone who wants to explore and have fun without too much pressure of ring work. Tilly is still green and will need a capable home prepared to continue developing her confidence and education.

Tilly is ready to find someone who appreciates a sensitive, thoughtful mare and can provide the consistency she thrives with. Her caretaker is unavailable for the next couple of weeks, so we are beginning to review potential homes now with viewings to be scheduled starting in September.

Leroy is a kind, uncomplicated gelding who has adjusted well to retirement life. He is quiet to handle, enjoys people and has an easygoing personality around the barn. Since arriving at New Start, he has settled comfortably into foster care and is now ready to find a home of his own.

Born in New Zealand, Leroy went on to have an impressive racing career, earning more than $360,000 with 48 wins from 182 lifetime starts. After a long and successful career on the track, his owners made the thoughtful decision to retire him from racing and send him to New Start earlier this year to begin his transition into life as a pleasure horse.

Leroy has been backed under saddle and took to the process very well. He is still green and will need someone comfortable continuing his education, but he has shown himself to be sensible and willing to learn. He is sound and comfortable and is best suited to a home interested in trail riding, pleasure riding and flatwork rather than high-impact disciplines. Due to the quality of his feet, he may benefit from front shoes if working regularly on harder footing. He is UTD on all of his vet work, farrier, etc.

He is ready for someone to continue building on the foundation he has started while giving him the time and consistency appropriate for a green horse. He would be a lovely prospect for a home looking for an enjoyable pleasure horse to develop at their own pace.

Lady is a sweet, uncomplicated mare looking for a home where she can simply enjoy life as a loved companion. After spending more than 10 years without the company of other horses, Lady has discovered just how much she enjoys having a little herd of her own. She is very sweet, enjoys attention and is an easy mare to have around. She can be bossy in a herd because she’s still figuring it all out, but overall she’s an uncomplicated mare.

Lady is being offered as a companion-only home due to an old injury causing her to have an arthritic knee. It does not cause her any significant trouble in her day-to-day life, and she gets around comfortably and happily. She would be a wonderful match for someone looking for a quiet pasture companion for another horse or simply another member of the family to love on.

Lady does well in a horse herd but is not suitable for a home where she would share her space with small livestock such as goats or sheep. Her ideal home will offer her horse companionship, good care and a peaceful place to enjoy her retirement years.

JJ is looking for a soft landing to enjoy his retirement. This kind, quiet gelding has extensive previous experience under saddle, including eventing earlier in life, and has recently been restarted. JJ is happily WTC both in the arena and out on the trails, making him a wonderful option for someone seeking a safe, steady partner to enjoy at a relaxed pace. He is a very quiet type, needs a soft and quiet handler because loud or heavier handling makes him nervous, so because of this, we recommend he does not go to a home with inexperienced handlers or small children.

When JJ arrived in our care, he was said to have Cushing’s disease due to his appearance and condition. Following further evaluation, we now believe his symptoms were more likely the result of a significant vitamin deficiency and a heavy worm burden. Since being on appropriate deworming program and nutritional support, he has continued to improve. JJ is a sweet horse who genuinely enjoys people, tries his best in everything asked of him, and is ready to find a home where he can enjoy the next chapter of his life in a semi retirement style environment.

MOMMAS MIRACLE

Andy is a playful, friendly and boisterous gelding looking for a very special companion home. He has been diagnosed with a mild case of Wobblers Syndrome, which causes some awkwardness in his hind end when running. Because of this, Andy has never been trained to race or drive and is being placed strictly as a non-riding companion horse. He enjoys life on 24/7 turnout and would be best suited to an experienced horse person who understands his limitations and can provide him with an appropriate, safe environment.

Andy is personable and will come up to be caught, accepts a halter and leads. He is barefoot and is accustomed to having his feet trimmed, although his handling and life experiences are more limited than those of a horse who has gone through race training. He also has limited trailering experience. Andy has plenty of personality and loves to play, and for the right experienced home looking for a companion rather than a riding prospect, he could be a very rewarding addition to the herd.

Candy has had quite the life, first enjoying an impressive career on the racetrack where she earned nearly $450,000 before moving on to become a broodmare. She went on to produce 11 foals and has now officially retired from broodmare duties. Her owners have recently moved and sadly need to downsize their herd, so they are hoping to find Candy a wonderful home where she can enjoy this next and much quieter chapter of her life. She is described as a lovely, quiet and uncomplicated mare who is very good to work with, including for routine veterinary and farrier care.

Candy currently lives happily on 24/7 turnout and is barefoot, with no reported medical concerns, injuries or soundness limitations. She is being offered primarily as a companion/non-riding horse, although pleasure driving or riding could be a possibility given her extensive racing background. After a lifetime that has included success both on the racetrack and in the breeding shed, Candy deserves a comfortable retirement with a family who will appreciate this sweet older mare for exactly who she is.

AMERICAN PARADISE

Perry is an absolute sweetheart with a big personality and an even bigger love for people. Perry currently lives outside 24/7 with a small group of geldings and is easy to handle for routine care, including the vet and farrier. He can be herd bound if his friends leave him, but he’s fairly well behaved if he leaves his friends. He does best in an all gelding herd as he can get grumpy over mares. He is the kind of horse who genuinely enjoys having his people around and would love a home where he can be part of the family.

Since returning to our program, Perry has been restarted under saddle and has been exceptionally sensible. He is currently going quietly at the walk and trot and has already headed out on the trails, where he has proven confident and safe. He also has a good foundation from previous years, and has previously completed some trail rides. Perry is still early in his restart and will benefit from someone who can continue building his education with consistency, but he has shown himself to be a willing and enjoyable partner with plenty of potential for pleasure riding, trails or further development.

Perry is sound and comfortable, although he does have a few management considerations his future family should be aware of. He suffered a racing injury at the end of his racing career which resulted in him falling to his knees on the track and has some permanent scar tissue from it, and mild arthritic changes so he cannot do heavy work. He also has thin soles and may benefit from shoes if regularly ridden on hard footing, and he can be somewhat girthy and appreciates calm, patient handling while grooming and blanketing. Perry also has some immune-system sensitivity and can react to certain forages, so his future home will need to be comfortable working with their veterinarian and adapting his management if needed. For the right family, Perry offers a wonderful combination of personality, experience and a genuinely sweet nature, and we would love to see him finally land in the home that will be his for good.

Sammy is a kind, easy-going gelding looking for a quiet retirement home where he can settle into a low-pressure lifestyle. He is currently living in a mixed herd, where he fits in well mid-pack. He can live outside full-time or in a stall setting and adapts well to routine. He has many wonderful years left him however sadly his caretaker is unable to keep him like they wanted to for the rest of his life.

On the ground, Sammy is a pleasure to handle. He is calm for daily care, enjoys grooming, and is well-mannered for both the farrier and veterinarian. He is currently barefoot and up to date on routine care, including vaccinations, dental, and farrier work.

Sammy does have a history of mild heaves, which is currently managed with Dex, and a low-dust environment. He will require the Dex management to keep him comfortable, making him best suited to an owner familiar with or willing to learn about respiratory care so he can continue to enjoy those many golden years he has left.

Under saddle, Sammy is best suited for light work. He is comfortable at the walk and enjoys slower-paced activity, but can be resistant when asked for more, including kicking out with stronger leg pressure, especially with an adult rider; which his owner feels is likely due to his age and probably minor discomfort carrying an adult. He would make a wonderful lead line type for young kids to learn the basics on.

Sammy would thrive in a home where expectations are low, and he can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle with continue care and attention. He is a sweet horse who loves being spoiled, and would make a great addition to someone looking for a companion or kid-safe family horse.

Daeva recently joined New Start’s rehabilitation program following a fractured sesamoid sustained at the end of March 2026. She is currently undergoing a carefully managed rehabilitation plan with stall rest, and her progress will continue to be monitored as she recovers.

At this stage, Daeva is focused on healing and taking things one day at a time. As with any significant injury, her long-term prognosis and future career options will depend on how she progresses throughout rehabilitation. Our priority is giving her the time, care, and support she needs to achieve the best possible outcome.

She is not currently available for adoption while she remains in rehabilitation. We look forward to sharing updates on her journey as she continues her recovery and begins the next chapter of her life beyond the racetrack.

Billy’s journey is just beginning. With careful rehabilitation, regular monitoring, and patience, our goal is to give him every opportunity to enjoy a comfortable and successful second career once he is medically cleared.

Summer recently joined New Start after being purchased at an auction sale at the beginning of August. As an older mare who arrived needing some additional groceries and care, her focus right now is simply on rehabilitation and giving her the time she needs to settle in. We are still getting to know Summer and will share more about her personality, history and future suitability as we learn more about her.

Summer is currently completing her quarantine period, which ends around Sept 6. At that time, she will be looking for a foster home where she can continue her rehabilitation and receive consistent day-to-day care while we get to know her better. She is not currently available for adoption, but we look forward to sharing updates as she progresses through the program.

MEMO

Memo recently joined New Start after being purchased at auction and is currently in rehabilitation while we give him time to settle into a proper aftercare retirement life. He comes to us following an extensive racing career that included 182 lifetime starts, 26 wins and nearly $500,000 in earnings, with his final race taking place in August 2025, it is unknown what he was doing for the past year since then but he has some fairly significant scars that tell us it was not incredibly kind. For now, our focus is on getting to know Memo and assessing what will suit him best in his next chapter.

Memo is currently completing his quarantine period and will be looking for a foster home once he is cleared to move. His foster home will play an important role in giving him time to decompress, continue his rehabilitation and allow us to learn more about him before determining his future suitability. He is not currently available for adoption, and we will update his profile as we get to know him.

Friends was purchased at a low level auction in PA, through our partnership with another aftercare organization who was thankfully onsite at the sale. She is currently completing quarantine in the United States, where she has been doing well and has received veterinary care while preparations are made for her trip to Ontario. We are still getting to know her, so her future suitability will be determined once she has arrived and had time to settle in.

Friends is expected to be ready to travel home to Canada at the end of August. Once here, our focus will be on giving her time to adjust, continuing to assess her needs and learning more about her personality and abilities before making any decisions about her future. She is not currently available for adoption, and we will update her profile as she progresses through the program.

LIMCO SUN

Stormy joined New Start in May 2026 through another aftercare program when his adoptive placement was no longer the right fit. As he was located closer to us, we were asked to help support his next chapter. Since arriving, Stormy has settled in well.

Stormy is broke to ride and has a wealth of experience, mainly from being an Amish driver for many years. He has participated in youth camps, group trail rides, and has spent time being the kind of horse people can enjoy. While he knows his job, Stormy is not the bravest horse in the world. He can become nervous when faced with situations he is unsure about, particularly when he’s on his own. There is also something about him that suggests life has not always been kind, but despite that, he continues to try his heart out for the people around him.

These days, Stormy is enjoying life in foster care, where he has taken on a very important role as a companion for another horse who recently lost their longtime friend. He has settled into the position beautifully. His only major complaint? The bugs. Stormy is quite certain that bugs are one of life’s greatest injustices and would happily vote to eliminate them entirely.

At this time, Stormy is not available for adoption as he continues in his foster placement. We look forward to sharing updates on this handsome little gentleman as he enjoys his well-earned role as a trusted friend.

SULLY

Sully arrived at New Start with very little history and no registration papers, but what he lacked in information, he made up for in heart.

Since arriving, Sully has spent the past several months focusing on healing, regaining weight, and learning that life can be predictable again. Through veterinary assessment, it was determined that Sully has arthritis in his hock, as well as evidence of an old injury higher up on the same leg. While he remains comfortable in his day-to-day life, these findings make him best suited for a companion home.

Sully is a gentle, sensitive gelding who is looking for someone willing to take the time to earn his trust. He can be shy with new people and situations, but beneath that uncertainty is a kind horse who wants to connect. He does best with a calm, consistent person who understands that confidence is built through patience rather than pressure. He has clearly been handled badly in the past and he needs to know he can trust his person to be kind.

In the herd, Sully is very low on the pecking order and prefers quiet, friendly companions. He would be happiest in a peaceful herd where he doesn’t have to compete for resources. A lower-key environment with steady routines will help him continue to thrive.

Sully is now currently a pasture partner for a horse who sadly lost their companion. He’s in a foster to hopefully adopt situation so is not available at this time!
