LILY DEVIE

Age: 4 Years Old (April 2, 2022)
Height: 15.3hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Companion

Lily joined New Start when it became clear that her body simply needed more time to mature before continuing race training. Still very young, Lily is bright, curious, and forward-thinking, with just enough opinion to keep things interesting. She is not a beginner horse, but she is not a difficult one either, just simply a young horse still learning about the world and figuring herself out.

Since arriving in December 2025, Lily has made excellent progress. She has recently begun her groundwork and lunging program and is taking everything in stride. At this stage, we have intentionally chosen not to start her under saddle. Lily’s immature knees and other developing joints mean that pushing her too soon would not be in her best interest. The focus right now is allowing her body the time it needs to grow and strengthen while continuing to build a solid foundation from the ground.

Lily has experienced very minimal soundness concerns while in our care, with only occasional soreness following enthusiastic play in deep snow during the winter months. Because of her history, we believe she will be best suited to a low-impact future involving casual riding, flatwork, trails, or pleasure riding rather than a demanding performance career.

Lily would be an excellent match for someone who enjoys working with young horses and understands that good things take time. She is smart, willing, and full of potential. For the right person, someone prepared to let her mature at her own pace, Lily offers the opportunity to develop a rewarding partnership from the ground up.

MACK THE KNIFE

Age: 13 Years Old (March 6, 2013)
Height: 16hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Pleasure Driving

Mack is a gorgeous gelding with an impressive 300 career starts, last racing in 2025. He is sound for a flatwork career and while he was diagnosed with navicular approximately five years ago, it was successfully managed throughout his racing career. With proper farrier maintenance and front shoes while in work, Mack has remained comfortable and active, and is expected to continue doing well with consistent management. Mack brings a wealth of life experience and is ready to transition into a quieter, more relaxed next chapter.

Mack is excellent in harness, making him a wonderful pleasure driving candidate. He is a steady driving horse who understands his job well. Since his racing retirement, his owner has now had Mack get a handful of rides under saddle and, while still very green, he has proven to be willing, quiet, and eager to learn. He is showing great potential to become a wonderful trail riding partner for someone looking for a kind and sensible horse to continue developing.

He can be a bit fidgety when being harnessed, particularly because he anticipates going to work, so he will benefit from a confident, quiet handler who does not get worried easily if a horse is moving around in the cross ties.

He is excellent to handle on the ground, with a great temperament, and does well turned out with other horses in a group setting. Mack would be best suited for a home interested in pleasure driving, or trail riding!

HOTCUPATEA

Age: 25 Years Old (June 11, 2001)
Height: 15hh approx.
Suitability: Companion / Light Riding

Sammy is a kind, easy-going gelding looking for a quiet retirement home where he can settle into a low-pressure lifestyle. He is currently living in a mixed herd, where he fits in well mid-pack. He can live outside full-time or in a stall setting and adapts well to routine. He has many wonderful years left him however sadly his caretaker is unable to keep him like they wanted to for the rest of his life.

On the ground, Sammy is a pleasure to handle. He is calm for daily care, enjoys grooming, and is well-mannered for both the farrier and veterinarian. He is currently barefoot and up to date on routine care, including vaccinations, dental, and farrier work.

Sammy does have a history of mild heaves, which is currently managed with Dex, and a low-dust environment. He will require the Dex management to keep him comfortable, making him best suited to an owner familiar with or willing to learn about respiratory care so he can continue to enjoy those many golden years he has left.

Under saddle, Sammy is best suited for light work. He is comfortable at the walk and enjoys slower-paced activity, but can be resistant when asked for more, including kicking out with stronger leg pressure, especially with an adult rider; which his owner feels is likely due to his age and probably minor discomfort carrying an adult. He would make a wonderful lead line type for young kids to learn the basics on.

Sammy would thrive in a home where expectations are low, and he can enjoy a relaxed lifestyle with continue care and attention. He is a sweet horse who loves being spoiled, and would make a great addition to someone looking for a companion or kid-safe family horse.

If you’re looking for a kind older gentleman to spend time with and give a soft landing, Sammy could be a great fit.

MAMMOTH JACK

Age: 17 Years Old (May 5, 2009)
Height: 16.1hh approx.
Suitability: Dressage / Jumping / Trails

Jack searching for his next person after previously being adopted through our program. His adopter moved to Alberta to pursue some lifelong goals, and Jack made the journey west with her. Unfortunately, it has become clear that Jack thrives best with a more consistent riding and work routine than life currently allows, so we are hoping to find him a wonderful new placement where he can truly flourish.

He is an incredibly talented horse with a huge amount of potential for the right rider. He is the type of horse who genuinely enjoys having a job and does best in a consistent 4–6 day per week program. When he’s in regular work, he is soft, athletic, willing, and absolutely stunning under saddle. He walks and trots beautifully into a frame, has talent for dressage, jumping, or trail riding, and truly shines when he has direction and consistency. Boredom though, does not suit Jack well. Time off tends to leave him feeling grumpy, sassy, and opinionated, and he can backtrack into pacing or become high-headed under saddle when out of routine. He is not a horse who will thrive sitting in a field for weeks between rides. He wants a partner, a purpose, and someone who appreciates both his talent and his personality.

Jack has been impeccably cared for his entire life and absolutely knows he is special. He is affectionate, expressive, and full of personality, the kind of horse who gives everything to “his person.” He does best with a confident, knowledgeable rider who understands sensitive horses and can guide him quietly and consistently. He particularly enjoys riders who talk to him and reassure him while working.

Jack is sound, barefoot, lives happily in mixed herd turnout, and adapts well to either stall or outdoor living. He has no current soundness limitations. He does have some obvious vision loss on one side, so he appreciates people speaking to him, especially on his blind side. Jack has a previous history of ulcers, which responded very well to GastroGard treatment, and he has remained ulcer-free over the last year with proper management.

This is not a beginner’s horse, but for the right rider, Jack is an incredibly rewarding partner with all the ingredients to excel in a low level dressage, jumping, or trail career. He is powerful, smart, funny, loving, and just a little dramatic in the way only a truly special horse can be.

We would love to find Jack a safe and suitable placement in Western Canada, but we are also happy to assist with transportation support for the right Ontario adopter if the perfect match comes along. If you think you may be the right fit for this handsome king, we would love to hear from you.

ON A CLOUD

Age: 13 Years Old (April 29, 2013)
Height: 15hh approx.
Suitability: Anything, with training

Cloud is the kind of mare that quickly wins people over. Sweet, sensible, easy to have around, and the type that settles into barn life like she’s always belonged there. She retired from racing in 2019 and has since enjoyed a relaxed lifestyle, living happily turned out 24/7 with other horses and causing absolutely no drama in the herd.

One of the things we love most about Cloud is that she has been with the same owners since she was just 2 years old. She has been well cared for, deeply loved, and thoughtfully managed throughout her life, and her kind, steady personality reflects that.

While Cloud has not yet been started under saddle, she is sound, well mannered, and has the kind of brain that gives her plenty of potential to head in almost any direction. Whether someone is looking for a pleasure driving partner, a trail horse prospect, or simply a kind and uncomplicated mare to continue bringing along, Cloudy offers a wonderful foundation to work with.

She stands well for handling, farrier work, and general day-to-day care, and is described as a lovely horse to have in the barn. Barefoot, up to date on routine care, and currently maintained on a simple diet with no special medical or feeding requirements.

Cloud would make a fantastic match for someone looking for a kind, level-headed mare they can enjoy and continue developing at their own pace.

SULLY

Age: 20’s approx.
Height: 15.1hh approx.
Suitability: Companion, Non Riding

Sully arrived at New Start with very little history and no registration papers, but what he lacked in information, he made up for in heart.

Since arriving, Sully has spent the past several months focusing on healing, regaining weight, and learning that life can be predictable again. Through veterinary assessment, it was determined that Sully has arthritis in his hock, as well as evidence of an old injury higher up on the same leg. While he remains comfortable in his day-to-day life, these findings make him best suited for a companion home.

Sully is a gentle, sensitive gelding who is looking for someone willing to take the time to earn his trust. He can be shy with new people and situations, but beneath that uncertainty is a kind horse who wants to connect. He does best with a calm, consistent person who understands that confidence is built through patience rather than pressure. He has clearly been handled badly in the past and he needs to know he can trust his person to be kind.

In the herd, Sully is very low on the pecking order and prefers quiet, friendly companions. He would be happiest in a peaceful herd where he doesn’t have to compete for resources. A lower-key environment with steady routines will help him continue to thrive.

After experiencing several transitions in a short period of time, Sully is finally ready to find a forever place to call home. He may not be looking for a riding career, but for the right family, he will make a wonderful companion and a loyal friend.

MOTHER HEN

Age: 19 Years Old (May 9, 2007)
Height: 16.1hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Low Level Showing

We first met Henny in the spring of 2025 when her previous owner contacted us for rehoming assistance. Before entering our program, Henny was able to find a home privately. Unfortunately, due to a recent health event, her current owners have made the difficult decision to seek a new home for her.

Henny is a sweet, kind mare with a wonderful disposition. She enjoys everything about life and is easy to handle for routine care and day-to-day management. She is currently living in 24/7 turnout, is barefoot, and is up to date on routine care.

Henny has had a number of rides under saddle however she has had some time off this spring and will benefit from conditioning and continued education before returning to regular work.

One of Henny’s standout qualities is her movement. She has a big, floaty trot that naturally catches the eye and could even make her a lovely prospect for the show ring. Whether someone is looking for a pleasure horse, trail partner, or a horse to continue developing, Henny offers a solid foundation and plenty of potential. She would make an absolutely wonderful family horse!

MASS BALANCE

Age: 13 Years Old (April 13, 2013)
Height: 16.1hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Low Level Showing

During his racing career, Mass earned nearly $300,000 and spent the majority of his career racing in Canada before finishing out his final starts in the United States. After disappearing from the radar in 2023, he resurfaced in early 2026 in a kill pen alongside another New Start rescue, Regal Son.

Fortunately, Mass was recognized by his former connections, who stepped up to bring him home. They provided the care he needed to regain weight and condition, and took the opportunity to evaluate whether he was interested in returning to the racetrack. While Mass remained sound, it became clear that he was ready to leave racing behind and enjoy a different pace of life.

Mass is now available for a second career! Please note that he has not been started under saddle. With his sensible nature, happy-go-lucky outlook on life, and his impressive movement, Mass has the potential to excel in a variety of disciplines. Whether your interests lie in trail riding, pleasure riding, or the show ring, he offers a strong foundation for someone looking to develop their own horse from the beginning.

Mass is ready to find a home where he can enjoy a well-earned proper retirement while beginning an exciting new career.

TEMPEST TALE

Age: 8 Years Old (March 31, 2018)
Height: 15.2hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Companion

Tilly is a gorgeous mare looking for a patient home where she can continue to build confidence and thrive. Currently located in New York with her owners after being returned from a previous placement that was not the right fit, they would love to see her return to Ontario and are willing to assist with transportation arrangements for the right home.

Tilly is a sweet, sensitive mare who can be shy in new situations but is never aggressive. She is sound, barefoot, and has no known medical concerns. After returning to her owners in February in pretty poor condition, she has regained weight beautifully and is now healthy and ready for her next chapter. She lives peacefully with other mares, is lower in the herd hierarchy, and would do best with a calm, consistent person who will take the time to earn her trust.

While Tilly has experience being driven, she can be nervous and lacks confidence, and she has not been started under saddle. She may be well suited as a companion horse, trail prospect, or a rewarding project for someone looking to develop a horse at their own pace. She can be hesitant to load on a trailer, but travels and unloads well once aboard. For the right home, Tilly is a wonderful opportunity to help a kind mare grow into her full potential.

FANTACY WRITER

Age: 5 Years Old (May 27, 2021)
Height: 15.2hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Flat Work

Fancy is a sweet, young mare looking for her perfect match. While she was bred for a career on the racetrack, life had other plans, and she never made it to the races. Instead, she is now searching for a home where she can begin the next chapter of her life at her own pace. She has not been started under saddle yet as we have been letting her learn about life away from the training centre, herd dynamics, and just “being a horse”. She was raised and lived on the same farm her entire life, so moving has been an adjustment for her.

She is a lovely mare who enjoys attention and has been a pleasure to have in our program. She is sound and comfortable in her day-to-day life, but she does have some hind-end conformational limitations that may impact the type of work she is best suited for long term. Because of this, we feel her future lies in a lower-impact career where she can thrive physically and mentally.

Fancy would make an excellent prospect for someone interested in pleasure riding, flatwork, trails, groundwork, and simply developing a partnership with a young horse. She has a bright future ahead of her with someone who values patience, consistency, and realistic expectations. While she may not be destined for a demanding performance career, she has plenty to offer the right person and deserves a home where she can continue to grow and succeed. She is not very brave, and can be pushy, so will need someone comfortable starting young horses and building their confidence.

She currently is turned out 24/7 and absolutely loves it. She is just not a huge fan of bugs, and she is best in a small herd of mares as she does have quite strong heat cycles.

PICK A GENRE

Age: 7 Years Old (February 22, 2019)
Height: 16.1hh approx.
Suitability: Flat Work / Trail Riding

Flipper has officially completed his rehabilitation program and is now enjoying turnout while beginning a gradual return to work. Following the severity of his previous injury, he is expected to have a future as a sound riding horse, but a low-impact career is recommended. Flatwork, pleasure riding, trails, and other casual pursuits are where we believe he will thrive.

He is the kind of horse who quickly wins people over. He is playful, expressive, and always seems to find a way to make people laugh. While he may not be the bravest horse in every situation, he is incredibly willing and genuinely wants to try for his person. More than anything, Flipper is looking for someone to build a connection with. He enjoys having a routine, loves the comfort of a stall, and would be happiest in a home where he can form strong bonds with both his humans and his pasture buddies.

Flipper has limited vision in one eye, though this has never significantly impacted his daily life. He also has an unusual history as a suspected cryptorchid (ridgling). While extensive investigation has been inconclusive to this point as to whether a retained testicle remains or was removed previously, we believe it is safest for Flipper to be housed and turned out exclusively with geldings. He has shown no stud-like behaviour in our care and has been stabled and trailered alongside mares without issue, but this is not a risk we are willing to take. He does not enjoy living alone and would love a few gelding friends to spend his days with.

If you’re looking for a horse with personality, heart, and a sense of humour, Flipper may be your perfect match. He has worked hard to get where he is today and is ready to find the person who will enjoy the next chapter with him.

STACER THE RACER

Age: 22 Years Old (May 12, 2004)
Height: 15.1hh approx.
Suitability: Companion

If you’re looking for a horse with a kind heart and an easy-going personality, Grace may be exactly what you’re searching for. This lovely mare is the type who gets along with just about everyone, whether it’s her pasture mates or the people caring for her. Sweet, sensible, and uncomplicated, Grace is a pleasure to have around and is known for her excellent manners on the ground. She joined our program after a long career as a broodmare, and is now ready for her retirement era to begin!

Grace is easy to handle, enjoys attention, and has the kind disposition that makes her a barn favourite. She settles well into new situations, is happy to make friends wherever she goes, and approaches life with a calm and willing attitude.

Grace does have a hernia resulting from a previous foaling. It is visible and considered a cosmetic blemish; however, it does not bother her and has not impacted her quality of life. We believe in being transparent about all aspects of our horses, and prospective adopters are encouraged to discuss any questions they may have regarding her history.

For someone looking for a kind companion and a mare with a wonderful temperament, Grace has so much to offer. She is proof that sometimes the sweetest horses are also the easiest to love.

LIMCO SUN

Age: 21 Years Old (May 22, 2005)
Height: 14.3hh approx.
Suitability: Trail Riding / Companion

Stormy joined New Start in May 2026 through another aftercare program when his adoptive placement was no longer the right fit. As he was located closer to us, we were asked to help support his next chapter. Since arriving, Stormy has settled in well.

Stormy is broke to ride and has a wealth of experience, mainly from being an Amish driver for many years. He has participated in youth camps, group trail rides, and has spent time being the kind of horse people can enjoy. While he knows his job, Stormy is not the bravest horse in the world. He can become nervous when faced with situations he is unsure about, particularly when he’s on his own. There is also something about him that suggests life has not always been kind, but despite that, he continues to try his heart out for the people around him.

These days, Stormy is enjoying life in foster care, where he has taken on a very important role as a companion for another horse who recently lost their longtime friend. He has settled into the position beautifully. His only major complaint? The bugs. Stormy is quite certain that bugs are one of life’s greatest injustices and would happily vote to eliminate them entirely.

At this time, Stormy is not available for adoption as he continues in his foster placement. We look forward to sharing updates on this handsome little gentleman as he enjoys his well-earned role as a trusted friend.
