INTAKES

Intake with New Start Standardbreds is designed to be respectful, transparent, and efficient. Whether a horse is coming directly from the racetrack, from a private home, or from a situation where extra support is needed, our role is to provide a safe transition and a plan that prioritizes each horse’s wellbeing.

Who We Help

We work with owners, trainers, breeders, or rescuers who want a thoughtful next step for a Standardbred. Some horses are healthy and simply need time and marketing to find the right home.

Others may require rest, rehabilitation, or specialized care before they’re ready for adoption.

In every case, we strive to match each horse with the safest, most appropriate placement.

How Intake Works

Start by sharing the basics, identity, age, health background, training status, temperament, location, and timeline. Our team reviews every submission promptly and responds with next steps.

When intake is finalized, we coordinate logistics such as quarantine when it may be needed, transport planning if required, and vet and farrier scheduling for horses entering our foster care program.

Throughout the process, we communicate clearly so you know what to expect and how the horse is progressing.

Direct-from-Track & Owner-Assisted Placements

For horses coming straight from racing or caring private connections, we focus on a smooth transition.

We collect recent photos and video, confirm health information, and create an adoption listing that showcases the horse’s potential and personality.

Many of these horses place quickly with the right exposure and guidance.

Urgent & Special-Needs Intake

When a horse is at risk or requires immediate assistance, we move quickly. Intake may include quarantine, veterinary evaluation, and a short period of stabilization before placement.

Our goal is to ensure safety first, then build a plan for recovery and adoption. If we are at capacity, we will still help with networking, and guidance wherever possible.

What New Start Provides

As a 100% volunteer-run program, we direct resources where they matter most. During intake and transition we prioritize safe placement, appropriate feed, farrier and veterinary care, and any rehabilitation the horse requires to be set up for success.

We also handle marketing and adopter screening so placements are responsible and sustainable.

What We May Ask From You

To act quickly but also responsibly, we may request recent medical history, care details, and any training notes that help us understand the horse. For time-sensitive placements, assistance with trailering or short-term board can accelerate intake.

Clear, honest information helps us create the best placement in the shortest time.

Aftercare & Follow-Through

Intake is the beginning, not the end. Once a horse is placed, adopters receive ongoing support, education, and check-ins. If a situation changes, our open-door policy ensures the horse always has a safety net and a placement back in our program.
